GUIDELINES FOR PROVISIONAL STATEMENTS OF INDIVIDUAL PAPER TOPICS

The provisional statement of your paper topic is due on Wednesday, January 20, 2010 before class. It should include:

  • a working title

  • a statement, approximately one paragraph long, of the specific question or problem that your essay will explore

  • a list of 3-4 primary sources you plan to use
Primary sources are sources that date from the period under consideration. For example, if you are writing about the origins of sex reassignment surgery, your primary sources might be drawn from European medical journals during the early decades of the twentieth century. If you are, on the other hand, writing about the publicity surrounding the Christine Jorgensen case, you would want to locate sources in mass circulation newspapers and magazines from the U.S. in the early 1950s.
